Anne Maheux, M.S.

Ph.D. Student in Developmental and Social Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh

Hello! My name is Anne (“Annie”) Maheux and I’m a 5th-year Ph.D. student in Developmental and Social Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh in the Teen and Young Adult Lab working under the mentorship of Dr. Sophia Choukas-Bradley.

Starting this summer, I will continue my research as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and as the Winston Family Distinguished Fellow at the Winston National Center on Technology Use, Brain, and Psychological Development.

My research examines sociocultural and technological influences on adolescent development, with a focus on three key outcomes: mental health, sexual behavior, and academic engagement. I study how gender roles, societal scripts, digital media, and peers affect adolescents' development and adjustment. Broadly, I seek to understand and ameliorate disparities to enhance well-being for all adolescents. To achieve this aim, I use cutting-edge quantitative methods capable of identifying trajectories of development and heterogeneity among diverse adolescents, and am committed to making advanced statistical techniques accessible to others through teaching and mentorship.

I am also passionate about social justice and service work, both in my research and my professional roles.
